Fr. Bill’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,
The "middle of summer" already has arrived, as we celebrate the Fourth this weekend.  For those who travel, enjoy!  And for those who are visiting, welcome!  As we travel through summer, I would ask you to keep a special group of "travelers" in your prayers this week - our youth and adult chaperones who will be joining a million youth throughout the world this month in Australia for World Youth Day.  Our pilgrims leave next Saturday morning.  A pilgrimage is a spiritual journey, to a particular place.  The journey is as important as the destination.  It reminds us to consider where we are on the "journey" with God in our lives.  It demands that we have eyes to recognize him should he walk beside us, as he did with the disciples at Emmaus.  It is a time for great spiritual growth and discernment.
This is exactly why Pope John Paul II, and now Benedict XVI, have called the youth of the world together every couple of years:  to help them get on the right track with their faith and with God.  So, I invite you to be spiritual supporters of their journey.  Pray for them.  We will have a short "Pilgrims' Prayer" send off for them next Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., here at the parish.  We invite you to come and join us in wishing them safety, growth and blessings.
     Fr. Bill Wegher

ST. MARY WOMEN CATHOLIC STUDY

Women: Find your purpose!  Feed your soul!  At last, a powerful Catholic Study just for you – “Full of Grace:  Women and the Abundant Life Foundational Study” – is coming to our parish and is sponsored by St. Mary CAFÉ/Evangelization Team.

Vatican II asked women to accept God’s urgent call to “aid humanity in not falling.”  Based on Johnette Benkovic’s book “Full of Grace”, this study will teach you how by revealing God’s purpose and mission for you.  In a group study format with video lectures by Johnette Benkovic, host of “The Abundant Life” on EWTN, you’ll delve into prayer, Sacred Scripture, Church documents and teachings, the “Catechism of the Catholic Church”, the lives of women saints, and the example of our Blessed Mother.  You’ll be nurtured and fed spiritually, mentally and emotionally.  You’ll learn to embrace your gift of authentic femininity and your dignity as a daughter of God.  You’ll be equipped to fulfill your call and mission as a woman of grace in the world today.

All women from our St. Mary family and any of their friends are invited to attend this Women of Grace Foundational Study series which will take place at St. Mary on Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m.  This series will begin Tuesday, July 8 and will run through the summer.

Participants will need to purchase a book and study guide for $36 which will be available soon from the facilitators.  If the cost of books is a problem, please speak to one of the facilitators, as the Knights of Columbus have generously provided funds that could confidentially help cover some or all of this expense.

The group’s facilitators are parishioners Heather Schultz and Liz Morris.  If you have any questions, or would like to sign up, please contact Heather Schultz at (734) 878-6493 (email:   dhschultz@peoplepc.com) or Liz Morris at (734) 954-0464 (email:   morris740@sbcglobal.net).

CHALICE PROGRAM

We were honored to host this sacred chalice in our home for a week.  It was our oldest son’s birthday party, the first day we received the chalice.  He proudly brought each family member to the mantel where we displayed the chalice, and explained how our family was praying for vocations.  The wonderful prayers helped us all to reflect on how we can best fulfill God’s will for us.  It also reminded us how lucky we are to have such faithful servants as part of our parish to help guide us on our journey.            God Bless, The Falinski’s

“Feed My lambs, tend My sheep, feed My sheep.”  These specific instructions of Jesus to Peter are for us as well.  We are not our own.  We were bought and paid for by the ultimate price of our Savior’s life and love.  We are His and exist for the purpose of serving Him, adoring Him, loving Him, and revealing Him to others.  May we be open enough to be led by the Lord – even in places and circumstances we may not like, for the sake of allowing ourselves to be used for the glory of the Lord.

"The Star Spangled Banner"

The Defense of Fort McHenry
by Francis Scott Key
20 September 1814

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Happy Birthday America!

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Let all Your works give You thanks, O Lord, and let your faithful ones bless You,” says the Psalmist.

It often takes years of futile experience for us to realize the truth behind the words Jesus speaks in today’s gospel.  “Come to Me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yolk upon you and learn from Me.”  When we finally surrender our need to control and completely give each part of our lives over to the Lord, we do find rest. As oxen are yolked together to ease the burden, so too, when we yolk ourselves to the Lord we find our load is lighter and the task is completed with ease. Let us give up our own way, timing, and agenda, and allow the Lord to take control of our hearts, minds, and lives for His glory.
